150+ Resume Action Verbs That Get Interviews

The first word of every resume bullet point sets the tone. Strong action verbs make your achievements sound decisive and impactful. Weak verbs ("Helped," "Assisted," "Was responsible for") make even impressive accomplishments sound passive.

Hiring managers and ATS systems both respond to specific, concrete language. Here are 150+ action verbs organized by skill category, with guidance on when to use each.

The Rules

  • -Always use past tense for previous roles, present tense for your current role.
  • -Never start with "Responsible for" -- it's the weakest possible opening. Say what you actually did.
  • -Vary your verbs. Don't start 5 bullets with "Managed." Use different verbs to show range.
  • -Match the verb to the impact level. "Spearheaded" is for major initiatives. "Updated" is for maintenance tasks. Don't inflate, but don't undersell either.
  • -Follow with a number. "Scaled the engineering team from 4 to 22" is better than "Scaled the engineering team."
